From its
inception in 1986, the Atlantic
Rally for Cruisers, more
commonly referred to as "The
ARC", has become a firm
favourite with those making
their first ocean crossing. The
concept has been so successful,
that many have returned in
subsequent years to repeat the
experience.
The principle
of sailing in the company of
other yachts, with the added
safety of the fleet’s daily
radio net, has encouraged many
to widen their horizons. In
addition, the organisers provide
an expert seminar week in Las
Palmas during the preceding
week, aimed at passing on much
information needed to undertake
such a long passage. Whilst that
vital ingredient "experience"
cannot be substituted, knowledge
passed on by others is always
useful.
Although
primarily designated a rally,
there is a race element involved
and there are prizes to be won.
You will be on the start line on
Sunday 21 November in amongst a
hundred or more other yachts - a
very exciting moment. After
leaving the Canary islands, the
yachts separate and drop out of
sight, leaving you to sail the
beautiful blue water of the
ocean apparently alone. Whilst
it is impossible to accurately
predict the arrival time in
Rodney Bay, St Lucia, around 16
days would be a good estimate
for a fast 2800 mile passage.
For those
wishing to satisfy the
requirements of the RYA/DTp
Yachtmaster Ocean qualification,
the opportunity is there to be a
watch leader and participate in
the preparation and navigation
of the vessel for the passage.
Throughout
the trip you will be instructed
on all aspects of ocean sailing,
safety, emergency procedures and
navigation, to name but a few.
There will be ample opportunity
to practise fixing position by
traditional celestial navigation
techniques and perfect those
skills.
The finish
line at Rodney Bay is one of the
few safe approaches accessible
day or night and once in the
marina a welcoming party will
greet us with fresh bread, fruit
and rum punches. There are a
number of relaxing social
functions to be attended
including a Caribbean street
party at a nearby village of
Gros Islet, before taking your
flight home in time for
Christmas.
The price per
berth includes full use of the
yacht and its equipment, your
skipper/instructor, event entry
fees, yacht insurance,
accommodation (including one
week on-board at each end), food
on board, water, gas, fuel,
mooring fees and a party or
three.
