Ford Cork Week 2004

Back

The event slogan is “the best fun regatta in the world - run by sailors for sailors”. This biennial event has become a firm favourite in the international yachting calendar, many serious sailors have it on their “must do list”. This is where the top regatta boys come to have a great week’s sailing and enjoy that most amazing Irish hospitality hosted by the oldest yacht club in the world - The Royal Cork Yacht Club in Crosshaven. There is a intention by the organisers to reduce the entry to 500 yachts and re-establish the original spirit of this regatta. A true sailing experience - the stuff which many old salt’s tales are made of! You’ll recount your stories for years to come.

Many of the competing yachts arrive by one of the numerous feeder races - there is even one from Bermuda! However as we now have a smaller and more transportable yacht than in previous years, we intend towing our Corby 25 to Cork by road, arriving by the preceding Thursday to re-rig and launch. This will leave Saturday and Sunday to test sail and practice - so there will be plenty of opportunity to sort out those techniques before the serious stuff really starts. Overall we can promise you a totally unique and varied week of sailing.

The racing is serious and fiercely competitive - you will be competing against an international field. With Go Sail and “Drakes Drum” our quick Corby 25, you will be entered in IRC class. Each day there is a different type of race scheduled for your class group; Coastal, Outer Loop Olympic, Windward/Leeward, Figure Four and Round the Cans. It is normal to be out on the water for 7 - 8 hours every day - all this is cunningly designed to create a very large thirst, which can be successfully treated with a pint or two of Guinness, Beamish or Murphy’s, to name but three!

Tent City, on the Royal Cork Yacht Club site, is the centre of the social activities and seems to hold the undivided attention of the 6,000 or so competitors wonderfully. Food ranging from a bacon sarnie (baguette really) to a four course dinner, chandlers, sail repair station, mobile bank, newspapers and the occasional bar are all within the easiest of staggering distances. Many other services are available through the information desk - even the day’s race results! You will also be made an honorary member of the Royal Cork for the week.

Our suggested programme is to travel to Cork on or around Saturday 10th and return on Saturday 16th July, great week - all for an incredible price of £695 - call us very soon!!!

Previous Experience

Whilst we always help newcomers to start racing yachts, it should be remembered that Cork Week is a top level regatta and there is virtually no opportunity during the event to provide training of the more advanced manoeuvres. In fact you will get much more out of the regatta if you start your training earlier in the year. Consequently, we intend running a crew training weekend (provisionally 22/23 May - at a special price of £135), in the Solent. This will be targeted at improving existing skills and achieving co-ordination in teamwork.    We can also offer early season sailing during March and April, where you can take part in some of the Spring Series weekends for race training and good “round the cans” race experience. - queries or more information call. We look forward to sailing with you in this world famous regatta.

Go Sail - for the experience!
