Spring &Winter  Series 2004

Back

Everyone interested in sailing admires the co-ordinated skill displayed by the top level race crews. Occasional glimpses on television and other media, of the Admiral's Cup and America's Cup action, show the results that knowledge and hours of practise can achieve. One only has to race at local levels to realise that the winning yachts treat their racing very seriously and get untold enjoyment from competing with total concentration.

Many would like to get involved either as newcomers to this aspect of sailing or simply to improve their existing racing knowledge and techniques. Until now, the problem faced by most is that there has been little structured training available and access to expert tuition is difficult. Consequently, GO SAIL are pleased to offer a progressive programme of race training, giving you the unique opportunity to practise the manoeuvres required to race effectively and to utilise them on the actual race course. The spinnaker is used extensively, this sail adds so much additional area to the sail-plan and of course boat-speed, it has to be used at every opportunity.

warsash.gif (1244 bytes)We participate in the Warsash Spring Series and the Hamble Winter Series which are among the most competitive of their type in modern yacht racing. These Solent based series take place on Sunday mornings, leaving Saturdays free for concentrated race tuition on the water and video or lecture material in the evening. Topics for discussion include yacht design, sailmaking, racing rules and how to use them to your advantage, race navigation / tactics - but we are open to your suggestions. Based in Cowes we can usually find the relevant expert to talk about their speciality!

Our racing yacht is Drakes Drum (a Corby 25 - new in 2001), which during the last two years has participated many international regattas and races. Our top speed to date is 13.6 knots, aIt’s up to you to beat that. Terry is the main instructor for the race training programme, but we do have visiting experts - who contribute to the programme and keep you on your toes.  Individual progress will be monitored and whilst specific areas of skill will develop it should always be remembered that it is teamwork that wins and total knowledge will benefit the team.
